Charly, so wird Karl Rottenschlager von allen genannt, ist ein besonderes Exemplar von Mensch - das werden ihm wohl die meisten attestieren. Als Sozialarbeiter in einem der größten Gefängnisse Österreichs in den Nach-68ern kannte er die Emmausgemeinschaft von Abbe Piere, der in Paris seit 1949 mit Obdachlosen gewohnt, gelebt und gearbeitet hat und bis 2005 30 Jahre lang die Umfragen nach dem beliebtesten Franzosen angeführt hatte. Charly träumte den Traum einer Emmausgemeinschaft in St. Pölten und hat sie - nach mehreren wegen unterschiedlicher Widerstände gescheiterten Anläufen - 1982 gegründet. Die Gemeinschaft umfasst mittlerweile vier Wohnheime, drei Notschlafstellen, zwei Tageszentren und vier Betriebe, die den Einstieg in den Berufsalltag erleichtern sollen. Charly hat auch den Sozialmarkt St. Pölten (soogut) gegründet, wo von Großhandelsketten weggeschmissene Lebensmittel aussortiert und zu geringen Preisen von Personen mit geringem Einkommen eingekauft werden können. Allein der soogut Markt in St. Pölten arbeitet mit 100 freiwilligen Helfern (eine davon meine Frau einen Halbtag pro Woche). Die Unterstützergemeinschaft von Charly umfasst über 4.000 Menschen - ein großes WIR! Charly ist inzwischen in Pension und hat die Leitung in jüngere Hände gegeben. Aber ist keinesfalls im Ruhestand - im Gegenteil!
Ich kenne Charly schon seit den 1990er-Jahren. Er ist mir ein treuer Freund geworden, der auch mich in einer Notsituation tatkräftig unterstützt hat. Das Interview führe ich in unserem Wohnzimmer, wo sonst unsere Kinder üblicherweise Musik machen oder jetzt im Lockdown unser 16jährige Sohn sein Distance Learning praktiziert. Charly sprudelt richtig vor lauter Spirit und Begeisterung. Ich konnte und wollte ihn nicht bremsen, und so ist das Interview etwas über die Zeit (1:19h). Man könnte Charly aber noch stundenlang zuhören ...
